Stop At: Gadaladeniya, Sri Lanka

Galadeniya Vihara is an old monastery built over a rock in Diggala in the district of Kandy. According to an inscription carved into the walls the temple was built in 1344 AD by King Buwanekabaghu the fourth. The temple was designed by the South Indian architect Ganesvarachchari in a design similar to South Indian architecture. The temple was originally known as Dharma Keerthi Vihara according to the wall inscription and only received the name Gadaladeniya dur to the village of the same name where it’s located.

Stop At: Embekke Devalaya, Embekka Village Three Kilometers from the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Handessa 20480 Sri Lanka

Embekke Devalaya is an ancient temple built by King Vikramabahu III of Gampola Era. Dedicated to the local deity, Kataragama deviyo, Embekke Devalaya has intricate wood carvings adorning its pillars and high pitched roof. There are three areas of this site which are the Hevisi Mandapaya which means the Drummer’s Hall, Digge – Dancing Hall and Garagha which is a sanctum. It was originally built with three stories but today, only the extraordinary and exquisite carvings are left to be seen which give insight on the great architecture that was used during that era.

Stop At: Lankatilaka Temple, Gadaldeniya Rd, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka

The majestic Lankathilake Vihare, one of the most magnificent architectural edifices in the Gampola Kingdom was built on the crest of a large rock named Panhalgala overlooking the Hantane Mountain range in the Hiripitiya hamlet in Udunuwara. The temple structure is such that it radiates from the centre in the four cardinal directions, like a cross. Only then ground floor and part of the first floor of the original temple can be seen today, though the temple appears to have three stories from the outside.

The Sacred Temple of Tooth is the most iconic place in Sri Lanka. It houses the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha and it is the holiest place of Buddhists. As the legend goes, the Buddha’s tooth was given to the Sri Lankan monarchy in ancient times, and was passed around through various kings and holy men who hid, moved, and relocated the tooth a number of times across the centuries. Now the tooth is housed in a dedicated temple where worshipers can visit the relic, which is held in a golden stupa inside the two-story shrine.
