Stop At: Kalutara Bodhiya, Galle Colombo Main Road, Kalutara 12000 Sri Lanka

Built in the 1960s, the three-storey Kalutara Bodhiya is the only stupa in the world that is hollow and has access to the inside. Situated on the Galle Colombo main road, by the side of Kalu River just south to the Kalutara city, it is believed to be one of the 32 saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Even after the subsequent colonization of the island that began from the 16th century till the middle of the 20th century, the sacred tree still exists and is venerated by anyone who passes it. The Kalutara Bodhiya is also one of the best places to witness the coastal beauty of the place.

Stop At: Richmond Castle, Riverside road, Kalutara 12000 Sri Lanka

Richmond Castle, built at the turn of the century in Kalutara, is considered one of the most spectacular architectural works of the period. It used to be the residence of Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The regal building stands tall upon a beautiful hill right next to Kalu Ganga. The total extent of the estate is 42 acres. As the building is managed by the Public Trustee, anyone traveling in the area can visit it and admire its rich grandeur and style. Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena built this mansion to resemble a castle in India, which belonged to his schoolmate Raja of Ramnand. The building has two storeys, 16 rooms, 34 windows and 99 doors.

Stop At: Fa Hien Caves, Pahiyangala, Kalutara 12000 Sri Lanka

Fa Hien caves basking on the Kalutara district are the oldest evidences for Mesolithic habitation. Fondly known as “Pahiyangala” by the locals, this cave gets its name due to an ancient Chinese monk who’s said to have used the cave as his rest stop, centuries ago. This cave is archeologically rich, and is the largest cave in the island. Additionally, it’s also one of the largest found natural rock formations in Asia. The cave was also the site of a remarkable archaeological discovery that dug up human skulls dating back about 37,000 years—the remains of one of the region’s oldest prehistoric human settlements. A trip to this cave is known to be quite adventurous so wearing sensible shoes is advised.

On the Southern outskirt of the busy city of Colombo, hidden behind coconut plantations lies the most beautiful beach on the west coast of the island. It is has calm water combined with a golden, sandy beach. It is a perfect spot for a family get away or a couple looking for a nice beach getaway. Not only is the calm water of Wadduwa beach open for swimming but its also open for various water-sport activities from jet skiing to wind surfing and is definitely worth a visit.
