Stop At: Wewurukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya, Beliatta Rd, Dikwella 81200, Sri Lanka

The Wewurukannala Vihara temple is dominated by an image of a seated Buddha. It is 160ft high, the largest statue in all of Sri Lanka and dates back to the time of King Rajadhi (1782 – 1798). The temple is divided into three parts, the oldest of which dates back to the 18th-century reign of King Rajadhi and has a more modest Buddha worked into the structure’s outward-facing architecture. The second element, the giant Buddha statue, was constructed in the 1960s when a penchant for larger-than-life roadside attractions took the world by storm. At 160 feet tall, it literally and figuratively rises above the quagmires of earthly life. Which leads to the third, most overlooked, aspect of Wewurukannala Vihara: in order to meet the big Buddha up-close, visitors must first navigate the Tunnel of Hell.

It is a perfect place for surf families to stay, catering for beginner to intermediate level. Also the bay is surrounded by some of the nicest villas on the south coast, mid to high end hotels and guest houses. Super quiet location far away from the noise of the main A2 road, turning just south of Dickwella main town.

Stop At: Hummanaya Blow Hole, Kudawella, Tangalle Sri Lanka

Located deep down the Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, sandwiched between the small towns of Dickwella and Kudawella, the Hummanaya Blowhole is the only natural blowhole in the country and coincidentally the second-tallest blowhole in the world. Depending on the conditions of the sea, it can spray a tower of water often reaching as high as 25-metres to 30-metres. Should you be on the lookout for unique natural features on your coastal holiday in Sri Lanka, this natural phenomenon is just one of many attractions to witness.
