The Tea appreciation walk at Handungoda tea estate is designed to inculcate the globe with tea culture. Tarry by the garden early in the morning and you will get the chance to commingle with the ladies in white to try plucking the buds yourself. A guided tour around the garden will allow you to get familiar with White tea harvesting, green leaf plucking and rubber tapping. Thereafter have a homely welcome at the proprietor’s bungalow to have a tasty treat with chocolate cakes and a sizzling cup of Oolong tea.

Believed to be a significant figure in Mahayana Buddhism and sometimes believed to be the depiction of a foreign king that was afflicted with the curse of leprosy. The rock is a highly debated monument in the world of archaeology, however, one thing that everyone can agree on is the intricate carvings of the statue itself, making it quite the perfect setting for the history buff and the art lover.

Taprobane Island provides one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic photographs, an impossibly romantic destination perfect for a traveller seeking a truly escapist location. It peers from behind trees on a rocky outcrop in Weligama Bay, surrounded by two-and-a-half acres of secluded gardens, jungle and the sea. Look north for the mainland; look south and there is nothing between you and the South Pole. The island was bought for the princely sum of Rs250 in the 1920s by the Count de Mauny of Talvande, a Frenchman driven to Ceylon by marital and financial problems, who was so inspired that he remained to build his dream home. The villa’s history is lovingly recorded by framed letters and photos. The original octagonal villa has been beautifully restored: it has five spacious suites, high wooden ceilings and cooling white terrazzo floors.

Stilt fisherman along Sri Lanka’s southern coast are about as iconic as it gets for a tourist attraction. Koggala, Weligama area are well famous for stilt fishing. The silhouettes of these anglers perched on their silts above a shallow reef, with the sun setting behind them never tires in its simplistic beauty. These veterans who seem to defy gravity with their balancing skills are humble souls trying to eke out a living through traditional means.
