Stop At: Jathika Namal Uyana | ජාතික නාමල් උයන, Madatugama – Pubbogama – Andiyagala Rd, Sri Lanka

One of the more intriguing attractions of the Cultural Triangle, the Jathika Namal Uyana or ‘The National Ironwood Forest’ is considered to be the largest Ironwood forest in Asia and a hotspot for various endemic fauna and flora to thrive in, including special herbal plants. Coupled with the rather, out of place Pink Quartz Mountain, the National Heritage site is a haven for the nature lover and the adventure seeker. Another highlighting feature is the Pink Quartz Mountain that possesses a history of more than 550 million years and has become a stomping ground for the adventure traveller, as it boasts of stunning views of the distant mountain ranges and valleys in the Cultural Triangle.

Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka

Also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, this cave temple is built within five caves under a vast overhanging rock. There are over 80 documented caves in the surrounding area and there is evidence to suggest that prehistoric Sri Lankans may have lived in these caves over 2,700 years ago before Buddhism was established in Sri Lanka. The rock plateau stands about 160 meters above its surrounding landscape offering spectacular views from the temple complex. It is believed that King Valagamba of Anuradhapura took refuge in the Dambulla caves when South Indian invaders took over the Capital city.

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic historical monuments, Sigiriya is an ancient palace and fortress built on a rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level. This magnificent complex includes remnants of a palace on the top of the rock plateau surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast landscaped gardens, ponds, canals, alley ways and fountains. Thought to have been built by King Kashyapa during 477 – 495 A.D as a fortress and royal residence, Sigiriya was used as a Buddhist monastery after his passing.
