Stop At: Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, Kandy – Jaffna Highway, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka

The Buddhist temple complex of Dambulla consists of five cave temples carved under a very large overhanging rock. The temples include numerous carved statues of Buddha, and his faithful disciple Ananda, as well as Hindu deities. Fifty or so Buddha statues, including a life-sized granite one, are all contained inside the temple as is small stupa surrounded by eleven seated Buddhas. Another unusual feature of this particular cave temple is the large metal bowl that was placed inside the cave centuries ago, presumably to catch rain dripping from the cave roof. It’s said that even in a severe drought, the water in the bowl does not dry up. Dambulla is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the region known as Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. If you ever go to Sri Lanka, you must go to Dambulla. It is a very unique and spectacular site!

Sigiriya is a rock fortress built by King Kashyapa I and was declared a World Heritage site in 1982 as it displayed the cumulative effect of science of town planning, arts, architecture, construction, landscape architecture and the science of water management practiced in Sri Lanka. The climb up the rock ends with an amazing view. The base of the rock has different structures. The frescoes painting and everything else is simply beautiful. The best part of it is the view from the top though there are incredible views throughout the climb. It is enchanting and fills one with amazement, covered with forests on all sides. Stop At: Minneriya Safari, Sigiri Rd, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka

Minneriya, situated at the centre of the Cultural Triangle, is a good alternative to the busier parks in the south and it is easy to weave a jeep drive here between visiting the ancient sites in this area. More than 20 mammals have been recorded in Minneriya National Park. In addition to its large elephant population, Minneriya also has leopards, sloth bear, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild buffalo, and wild pig, grey langers, monkeys, mongoose porcupine and pangolin. Nine species of amphibians have been seen, among them the native red-lipped lizard, water and land monitor lizards and mugger crocodiles.
Both Minneriya and Kaudulla have recorded more than 170 species of birds, ranging from migrating waders like sandpipers and plovers to forest birds like hornbills, woodpeckers and jungle fowl.
