Stop At: Yala National Park Sri Lanka

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife park due to the presence of many leopards. The elephant population of Yala is approximately 250-300 individuals, and is broken up into small family groups and loan males. Other mammals include sloth bear, spotted deer, Sambar deer, the occasional Mouse deer, Rusty-spotted cat, and diverse birdlife including raptors, waders, and shorebirds. It covers approximately 1,300 square kilometres and is home to a range of ecosystems found nowhere else in Sri Lanka. With vegetation including moist and dry monsoon forests, thorn forest, savannah grasslands and fresh and saltwater wetlands, it comes as no surprise that the Yala National Park has the perfect habitats for the large number of endemic plant and animal species unique to the country, thus making it one of the chosen wildlife safari destinations that features on everyone’s tour itineraries.
