Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Galle

Take a magical speed-boat ride down the beautiful Madu River, a wetland estuary spreading over 900 hectares of which 770 hectares is covered with water and inhabited with 64 islands. The boat ride is a wonderful way to take a closer look at this complex wetland ecosystem; a world heritage site protected by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands being one of the last wetlands in Sri Lanka to contain a pristine mangrove forest. Journey past massive mangrove forests, glide under the canopy of the forest tunnels as they curve playfully towards the watercourse. Take in the unique biodiversity of the Madu River and its surrounding islands that boasts of hundreds of birds, plants, fish and animals.

The lighthouse is also known as Point de Galle Light. Built in 1848, it is the oldest light station of Sri Lanka. The lighthouse is 26.5 meters high and is located within the Galle Fort. Its exact location is about 6 meters above the road level on the ramparts, at a place known as the Point Utrecht Bastion. This location gives a full view of all ships entering the Galle Harbor. The Galle Lighthouse is a UNESCO world heritage site and is a well-known tourist attraction in Galle. The lighthouse was first lit in the year 1939. The cylindrical lighthouse tower with a balcony and lantern is built using concrete and stone.

The story of the Galle Dutch Fort; a UNESCO World Heritage Site reverberates through every traveller’s photos and captions. Initially built by the Portuguese in the 16th century during their conquests, the fort was later fortified and conquered by the Dutch in the 17th century, until it later fell to the might of the British. The old town of Galle was once used as a trading port for spices and other goods for over 200 years. However, today, the fort has been transformed into a place of history, romance and beauty where travelers are warmly welcomed to dive head first into the exotic stories and be a part of this heritage site.

Beach Jungle beach is not only attraction, but also a great place to stay. It is a small beach hidden in the jungle a couple of kilometers from Unawatuna. Unfortunately, today it is impossible to say that this is a secret and little-known deserted beach, but once it was. Now in nice weather, it attracts a lot of tourists, and the path to the beach through the jungle never heals. Stupas are monuments that serve as beacons of peace for people of all nationalities and creeds, and the clean, rounded design of the Unawatuna pagoda exemplifies this. Visitors can walk or drive the shaded path to the Peace Pagoda and they will be rewarded with a towering, white bell-like structure surrounded by gold-painted statues. Sets of steps also lead to a walkway encircling the shrine which offers a 360-degree view of the jungle and bay.

Day 2: Galle –Mirissa – Dickwella – Tangalle

Mulkirigala temples are an ancient group of Buddhist temples in Mulkirigala town, near Tangalle, in Hambantota district of Southern Province, Sri Lanka. These temples are built on a 205 metres high natural rock and have four other rock hills in the vicinity, namely Benagala, Kondagala, Bisogala and Seelawathiegala. The rock temples are amidst lush green coconut plantations. This site has been officially recognized as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka, by UNESCO. Mulkirigala rock temples in Tangalle are known by different names, such as Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara, Mulgirigala Vihara, Muvathitigala Vihara Little Sigiriya, etc., as given by various sects of Buddhists, priests and some by ancient locals and learned men.

Day 3: Tangalle – Yala

Day 5: Ella – Negombo/Colombo

Built at 3100m above sea level, among the craggy peaks of the Central Highlands; the Nine Arches forms a viaduct between the Demodara and Ella Railway stations. According to history, the bridge was built by the locals using such materials; when the construction came to a standstill from the lack of steel caused by World War I.
