What’s the point of not visiting the Sri Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic when you are in Kandy? It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, the shrine overlooks the vast expanse of the Kandy Lake. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. Everyday thousands of white-clad pilgrims make their way to this hallowed space, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani for their offerings and prayers, known as pujas. Annually, during the Esala Perahera procession, the Relic casket gets paraded through the streets atop a male elephant. The 10-day festival is one of the largest Buddhist festivals in the world and the most significant in Sri Lanka.

Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya is the oldest formal gardens in Sri Lanka. Peradeniya Gardens attracts approximately 2 million local and foreign visitors annually. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees and is renowned for its collection of orchids and the long, palm framed pathways. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture and the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka is attached to it as well.The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya was used as the South East Asian Headquarters of the Allied Forces during the Second World War as well.

The name “Bahirawa Kanda” means the gnome mountain, Sri Lankan myths state that a Bahirawa is a demon associated with earth and territory. According to legend there was a powerful Bahirawa Devalaya at the top of the Bahirawa Kanda where hundreds of beautiful girls had been sacrificed to Bahirawa Deviyo. There is a Buddhist temple located alongside the Buddha statue in the Bahirawa Kanda hill. This beautifully sculpted white statue displays Buddha in the seated Nirvana pose and can be seen from the entire city of Kandy that sprawls out before it. It stands at 88 feet in height and is one of the biggest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka.The hill provides panoramic views of the Kandy city including the mountain range nearby and the Bogambara prison. It makes for some spectacular photographs and memories
