The Peradeniya Botanic Garden is a botanical garden in the city of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. It is the oldest botanical garden in the country and one of its largest. The garden was established in 1836 by the British colonial government and contains tree species native to Sri Lanka as well as many other types of plants that are native or introduced elsewhere. The most famous attraction at this botanical garden is its tree collection which includes some rare species such as the coconut palm (Lodoicea maldivica) which was first planted here in 1875 by Colonel Henry Osmond Brockman who had previously worked on plantations in Malaysia before moving to Ceylon where he began working at Peradeniya Botanic Gardens with Dr William John Elton whom he had met while working on their plantation in Malaysia (1870s).
