If you are in Srilanka, the Land of Buddha as it is known, Dambulla Cave Temple is one place you shouldn’t miss no matter what. This ancient temple contains a series of five pre-historic caves and 157 statues of Lord Buddha in total. The several exquisite paintings on the walls and ceilings of the temple are a reflection of the popular Buddhist religious art of the olden era. The history of the awe-inspiring caves, temple and rock dates right back to the 1st century BC. It’s not just the statues in the caves that could fascinate one, but also the several delicate and sinuous paintings on the ceiling and walls, produced with indigenous traditional paints. The rich ancient history, archaeological significance and culturally artistic values of the temple were recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1991.

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Sigiriya rock fortress is the most visited tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. It is sometimes known as the Sigiriya Lion Rock, after its original name “Sinha-Giri”. The name comes from its palace entrance through a massive brick sculpture of a lion head. Only the paws of this sculpture remain at the foot of the rock today. Sigiriya rock fortress is a fifth century fortified palace complex, which was used by King Kashyapa (477CE-493CE). The Sigiriya rock abruptly rises 600 feet high from the surrounding plains. The ruins of King Kashyapa’s royal palace are scattered on the peak rock plateau. The hike to the top is via 1200 steps. Some of them were constructed at the time of King Kashyapa. The foothills and immediate surroundings of the Sigiriya rock were once an elaborate royal pleasure garden. The archaeological value of the site is immeasurable, perhaps unsurpassed in South Asia.

Visiting the Minneriya National Park in the North Central province of Sri Lanka is a highlight of many of our travelers who get to witness the spectacular sight of “The Gathering” of hundreds of elephants during the summer months. Originally a wildlife sanctuary, Minneriya was designated a national park in 1997 to help protect the area of the Minneriya tank – the large reservoir in the park created by King Mahasena during the third century and therefore having historic importance and now home to many birds. It is a birdwatchers paradise with painted storks, grey herons, grey white pelicans, lesser adjutants, Sri Lanka jungle fowl, brown-capped babblers being the highlights. The two endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka; the tufted grey langur and toque macaque, both call Minneriya home and can be sighted during safaris around the park.
