The migration season starts from October and moves through April, the chances of encounters are the highest from December to February. Sri Lanka is one of the best places to spot the blue whale, the largest mamma in the ocean and the largest mammal ever known to have lived on earth; even outweighing the dinosaur and having a lifespan of 80-110 years. Blue whales need to surface to breath can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes before they have to come up for air, which allows for great sightings and photography. Apart from the Great Blue, you may also spot sperm whale, humpback whale, and fin whale among a variety of other species.
