Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Nuwara Eliya

Stop At: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Sri Dalada maligawa or the temple of tooth is considered as the most religious and scared pilgrimage by Sri Lankan Buddhists. It is said that this temple is home to the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Due to the temple, Kandy was chosen as the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site. There are so many ancient architecture structures and buildings.

Stop At: Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, Bahirawa Kanda Rd, Kandy, Sri Lanka
The temple on the hill of Bahirawakanda, called the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, is most well-known to tourists for its giant Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any point in the city of Kandy. Built in 1972, the statue shows Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose, which is the position associated with his first Enlightenment. Reaching a height of more than 25 metres, it is one of the tallest statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka.

Stop At: Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya Road, Peradeniya 20400 Sri Lanka
The royal botanical garden is the oldest formal garden in Sri Lanka. It is located 460 Meters above the mean sea level about 5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya attracts approximately 2 million local and foreign visitors annually. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees and is renowned for its collection of orchids and the long, palm framed pathways. Though the groundwork for the current gardens were laid in 1821 by Alexander Moon, the origins of the Botanic Gardens date as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court at Peradeniya near the Mahaweli river.

Stop At: Kandy Lake, Centre of Kandy City, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
A leisurely stroll around it, with a few stops on the lakeside seats, is a pleasant way to spend a few hours around the southern edge of the lake can mar the peace somewhat. The nicest part to walk along is the area around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The lake is artificial and was created in 1807 by Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, the last ruler of the kingdom of Kandy. Several minor local chiefs protested because their people objected to labouring on the project. In order to stop the protests they were put to death on stakes in the lake bed. The central island was used as Sri Wickrama Rajasinha’s personal harem. Later the British used it as an ammunition store and added the fortress-style parapet around the perimeter. On the south shore, in front of the Malwatte Maha Vihara, the circular enclosure is the monks’ bathhouse. A stroll through the Kandy Lake will be the perfect way to end your first day in Kandy.

Day 2: Nuwara Eliya – Kandy – Negombo/Colombo

Stop At: Pedro Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Nestled amongst the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country and situated in the shadows of the country’s highest mountain, Pidurutalagala, you will find the Pedro Tea Estate. Sri Lanka is famous for its tea production, and you can’t really come here without visiting one of their many tea plantation factories. Walk through the tea fields and watch closely how the colorfully clad tea pluckers carefully pick the prized “two leaves and bud” that go into making the world finest Pure Ceylon Tea. Try your hand at picking the leaves; chat with the pickers, let them show you how it is correctly done. Next take a guided tour of the tea factory to see and understand the intricate procedure of tea processing. The full process involves Tea Plucking, Withering, Rolling, Fermentation, Firing and Sorting/Grading.

Stop At: Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Named after Si William Gregory in 1873 the Gregory Lake is famous for its prominent attraction used for water sports and recreational activities. Lake Park, Boat Rides are available. At the southern end of the town is Gregory Lake where the holiday makers can enjoy a leisurely walk on the paved walk ways, with swan shaped paddle boats for the more adventurous. There are pony rides round the lake for the kids and even adults, with plenty of fast food stalls located in a separate area where one can enjoy a meal or a snack.

Stop At: Victoria Park of Nuwara Eliya, A5, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
Victoria park was established in 1897 and was named after Queen Victoria’s 60th jubilee coronation, it has a land mass of 27 acres. This is a place where most people, especially holiday makers never fail to visit and enjoy the beautifully laid out gardens with the colorful flora and fauna which are maintained beautifully by the municipality. The park has Nanu Oya River running through it which adds on to this well maintained and beautiful public park in Sri Lanka. The lush green Victoria Park is a perfect way to spend some quiet time in the city.

Stop At: Post Office Nuwara Eliya, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
Located at the center of the town this 100 year old building is one of the most popular colonial constructions of “Little England’. The red brick exterior is hard to be missed while one is on the streets of Nuwara Eliya. Built in Tudor style, the post office has a distinctive edge and stands as a remnant of the old world Ceylon. A clock tower spirals from one side of the building.
