Hikkaduwa is a popular beach resort in the south western coastal belt of Sri Lanka replete with lovely palm fringed bay beaches. Hikkaduwa beach affords ample opportunities for water sports, diving & snorkeling.Hikkaduwa is famous among tourists for its natural attractions: wide, clean beaches, coral garden, ocean with crystal clear water and hot sun are just to name a few.

Turtle farm in Hikkaduwa or Sea Turtle Hatchery & Rescue Center is a small and yet a very nice turtle farm and rescue center. Here visitors may see turtle eggs which are safely buried in the sand hatchery. It usually takes two days for eggs to hatch. Turtles are held really gently with great attention to their proper development so that they can later be safely released into the sea where they can live in their natural habitat.It was such an honor to visit the hatchery and to participate in the release of the turtles.

Muhudu Seenigama Viharaya near Hikkaduwa is a temple situated in a small islet just 200 m offshore. The temple is Sinhalese Buddhist. Another temple at the shores of Seenigama, frequented by both Buddhists and Hindus, is dedicated to a local tutelary deity named Devol, who is also worshipped in Unawatuna. According to localization’s of Ramayana narratives, Seenigama was the place where Sugriva, helper of Lord Rama, began his campaign against the demon king Ravana of Lanka, in order to free Rama’s wife Sita from captivity.The island of the Seedigama temple lies on small rocky outcrop islet in only 200 m distance from the beach. The Seenigama island temple consists of two unpretentious buildings. They are surrounded by a wall to protect them from high waves. The Sinhalese name of the island temple is Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya.

The Madu Ganga is a minor watercourse which originates near Uragasmanhandiya in the Galle District of Sri Lanka, before widening into the Madu Ganga Lake at Balapitiya. The river then flows for a further a 4.4 km (2.7 mi) before draining into the Indian Ocean.The Madu River is very rich in biodivesity. It passes through the wet zone of Sri Lanka opening up into the large Madu Lagoon on its way to the Indian Ocean.The Madu River area surrounding the river are all swampy marshlands covered in mangrove forests.
The forest covers over 61 hectares, that is over 150 acres. 14 of the 24 species of mangroves are found in this area.
It is interesting to note that mangroves play a huge part in preventing erosion.
