King Vijayabahu III is the first king of Dambadeniya kingdom. Native Sinhalese began to move to the south or Maya rata because of the hard Tamil ruler Kalinga Magha as mentioned in Polonnaruwa kingdom. While he was the king of Polonnaruwa, king Vijayabahu III (a descendant of king Sirisangabo) became the king of Dambadeniya.

He conveyed tooth relic and Lord Buddha’s alms bowl to Dambadeniya from it’s hiding place Kotmale. His reign was largely spent reconstructing the shattered Buddhist infrastructure of the Sinhalese.

The picture shown below is Vijayasundararama temple at Dambadeniya which was used as the tooth relic shrine in Dambadeniya era.

Stop At: Dambadeniya Sri Wijayasundaraaraama Raja Maha Viharaya ශ්‍රී විජයසුන්දරාරාම රාජමහා විහාරය, 9572+RC7, Dambadeniya, Sri Lanka

All the religious buildings of the temple is built on a higher ground and a flight of granite steps are built towards this terrace. The steps ends at a Vahalkada . This is built on four rock pillars with a square roof. The entrance is a large door frame made of granite. It is believed that this was the Eastern Entrance to the inner city of the Dambadeniya Kingdom.

Dambadeniya kingdom came in to existence with the fall of Polonnaruwa kingdom to Kalinga Maga in the 13th century and a new king Vijayabahu III (also known as Vathhimi Vijayabahu) established his kindom under the protection of the Dambadeniya Rock in 1232. Along with this shift the Tooth Relic was too moved to Dambadeniya.

Panduwasnuwara city is about an ancient city in the city of Kurunegala, functioned as the capital of Sri Lanka during the reign of the King Pandukabhaya, Panduwasnuwara was the capital during the 12th century, during this era the Panduwasnuwara city held the tooth relic, as it is a sign of the Kingship, without which no one shall be recognized as king nor a queen. The kind Pandukabhaya had to retrieve the tooth relic as the south Indian Invaders stole it.
