Considered as the gem of Sri Lankan Culture and heritage Ruwanweli Maha Seya is the considered as one of the Biggest Stupa in Sri Lanka. UNESCO has named Ruwanweli Maha World Heritage Site-Culture because of its supremely glorious ancient living monuments. It was built by King Dutugemunu and considered as the oldest and most revered sacred site. It is also known as Rathnamali Chetiya, MahaThupa and Suwarnamaliseya which literally translates to ‘sand of gems’. Legends say the stupa derived its names due to the content of its invaluable treasures such as gold, jewels, and silver. It was said to have the scared touch of 4 Buddha hence you can see 4 Buddha statues.

Stop At: Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura Sri Lanka

Jaya Sri Maha Bodi is the oldest living tree documented in the history of world and is a sapling from the tree where Lord Buddha was enlightened. It was planted in 288 BCF and is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. It is said to be the right-wing branch from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya and was brought Ven. Sanghamitta Therini who introduced the Teachings of the Buddha to Sri Lanka.

Jethawanaramaya Stupa is a Buddhist monument which is located in the ruins of Jethawanaramaya Monastery in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Build by king Mahasen the stupa stands 22 meters as the world’s tallest stupa and the third tallest structure in the world. It is said to hold the relic of Lord Buddha’s Slash or the waist Tie. The most iconic feature of this stupa is the reclining statue of Buddha painted in vibrant colours. It is said that this was built using 90 million bricks and 100 elephants.

Situated in the heart of the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Abayagiri Dagaba can be named as major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism. It is considered as a world heritage site is it believed that the stupa was build on top of the foot print of Lord Budhdha hence signifies its importance as a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans. It was not only a temple but was also a fraternity for Buddhist monks all over the world.

Stop At: Isurumuniya Temple, At Royal Pleasure Gardens, Anuradhapura 50000 Sri Lanka

Set around a lovely lotus pond Isurumuniya was built in the era of king Kashyapa as a monastic complex to house all the caste children who were ordained. It is more popular because of the statues of “Isurumuniya Lovers’ which was originally in the royal Gardens and brought to the site afterwards. There is no exact guess as to whom it is the statue but most people depict that it is either Prince Saliya and Princess Ashoka Mala or Hindu god Shiva and goddess Parvati. It is also famous for the elephant, horseman and royal family carvings.
