Stop At: Mihintale, Anuradhapura Sri Lanka

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures. Located 11 km East of the sacred city of Anuradhapura is referred by many as the “cradle of Buddhism” in Sri Lanka, as this is the very place where nearly 2,350 years ago, the great disciple of Lord Buddha, Arahath Mahinda Thero preached the Buddhist. A flight of stairs consisting of 1840 steps will carry you to the summit of this sacred mountain with a breath taking site of the surrounding area on offer once on top. After the king embraced Buddhism, he declared the area where the saga took place a sanctuary, the first such historically recorded site in the world.

Stop At: Isurumuniya Rajamaha Viharaya, 89MR+R4J, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

The Isurumuniya Viharaya was constructed during the reign of Devanampiya Tissa who governed in Anuradhapura, the country’s capital. Connected to the Temple is a cave with a cliff above it. A small Dagoba was built on this cliff during a later period. At the picturesque entrance to Isurumuniya a rock can be seen either side of a crevice, and this rock seems to rise out of a pond. During dewanam piya thissa reign 500 high caste children were ordained, and Isurumuniya was built as a monastic complex to house all of them.

Sinhala translation of Twin Ponds is known as Kuttam Pokuna. It is located in Anuradhapura and an evidence for the best ancient hydrological architecture. Although these ponds named as “Twin ponds” they are not physically identical.These two ponds belong to the Abayagiri aramic complex and probably been used by the monks for bathing. The origins of these ponds are not known but it is thought to have been built during the reign of King Aggabodhi I 575-608. Although the architect of this Kuttam Pokuna is untold, the creativity behind him is still surprisable. Without the modern Engineering equipments and technology it is still unbelievable, to those who visit Kuttam Pokuna. Kuttam Pokuna is one of the best archaeological evidence left in Sri-Lanka to prove the talent of our ancestors.

Abhayagiri monastery is one of the most interesting & atmospheric quarters of Anuradhapura. Abhayagiri Vihāra was a major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism that was situated in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the most extensive ruins in the world and one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage cities in the nation. Historically it was a great monastic centre as well as a royal capital, with magnificent monasteries rising to many stories, roofed with gilt bronze or tiles of burnt clay glazed in brilliant colors. Founded in the 2nd century BC, it had grown into an international institution by the 1st century AD, attracting scholars from all over the world and encompassing all shades of Buddhist philosophy.

Ruwanweliseya Stupa Ruwanveli Seya Stupa, the foremost of the supremely glorious ancient living monuments of Sinhalese Buddhist Heritage at the city of Anuradhapura a UNESCO World Heritage Site-Culture was built by King Dutugamunu 161,137 BC, the Hero of the Nation, who hailed from Ruhuna. Considered to be an icon of architectural glory in ancient Sri Lanka, Ruwanwelisaya is one of the world’s tallest monuments, standing at 103 m 338 ft. and with a circumference of 290 m 951 ft. And also holds a place as one of the Solosmasthana the 16 sacred sites of veneration and the Atamasthana the eight sacred sites in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura, which are places believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.
