Once we go through the standard process of entry into the park, we will venture into the untamed wild of Minneriya which is a famous home to the majestic Sri Lankan Elephants. Although it is a great place for elephant spotting all year round, the scarcity of water during the dry season between June and September forces more and more elephants to gather on the shores of Minneriya Tank. By late August, the awe-inspiring site of up to 300 elephants can be seen during a phenomenon known as The Gathering. It is the largest gathering of Asian elephants that can be seen anywhere in the world.

Set in the heart of the popular cultural triangle of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park is mostly known for its incredible elephant migration, which is one of Asia’s finest wildlife experiences. During the drier months of June to September, as many as 300 elephants congregate in the Minneriya National Park around the ancient Minneriya water tank (which dates back to 3rd Century AD), taking advantage of the receding waters that provide an important water source. The topography of the park is comprised of scrub plains and mixed evergreen forests alongside rocky outcrops and wetlands, providing a range of habitats to suit a variety of critters.
