Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Sigiriya – Dambadeniya

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
Sigiriya is perhaps the most visited UNESCO world heritage historic site of Sri Lanka. It is not a surprise at all considering that the Citadel of Sigiriya is the 8th wonder of the world and is a true wondrous feat of ancient architecture and engineering.Located near the town of Dambulla, the Sigiriya lion rock is a palace complex built on an isolated rock that is about 200 meters tall. Archaeologists have found evidence to show that the rock had been inhabited during the prehistoric Mesolithic period. Until the 14th century this rock had been used as a monastery. Legend has it that King Kashyapa after usurping the throne from his father built Sigiriya fortress to protect himself a possible attack from Prince Moggalana who was his half-brother and the rightful heir to the throne. The view from up above rock that spreads a few kilometres and the strategically built moat that could be seen even today shows the visitors, the paranoid psyche of the King.

Stop At: Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, Kandy – Jaffna Highway, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka
Dambulla is today a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fascinating site is gracefully blended on a gigantic granite outcrop which towers more than 160m above the surrounding land. The rock is more than 1.5km around its base and the summit is at 550m. The caves were the refuge of King Valagambahu when he was in exile for 14 years. When he returned to the throne at Anuradhapura in the first century BC, he had a magnificent rock temple built at Dambulla. The site has been repaired and repainted several times in the 11th, 12th and 18th centuries. The caves have a mixture of religious and secular painting and sculpture. There are several reclining Buddha’s, including the 15meter long sculpture of the dying Buddha in cave 1. The frescoes show scenes from the Buddha’s life and Sinhalese history. Cave 2 is the largest and most impressive, containing more than 150 statues, illustrating the Mahayana influences on Buddhism at the time through introducing Hindu deities such as Vishnu and Ganesh.

Day 2: Sigiriya – Kaudulla – Negombo/Colombo

Stop At: Kaudulla National Park, Galoya Road, Habarana 51375 Sri Lanka
The wildlife sanctuary was designated a National Park in 2002 and serves as a elephant corridor for migrating Elephants from Minneriya and Wasgamuwa National Parks in the north central and the Somawathiya National Park in the north east regions. The park mainly consists of a mix of dry scrub forest and grasslands. The tank which dominates the background of the Park is an important meeting place for hundreds of species of wildlife which popularly includes hundreds of Elephants who come to water at the reservoir, especially during the dry seasons. Others include 24 species of mammals and Birdlife International has recognized Kaudula National Park as an important bird area, where 160 of species of birds have been identified. However the photographer’s favorite are the thousands of pelicans flocked together enjoying the water at sunset. Also identified here are 26 species of fish and 25 species of reptiles.
