Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Sigiriya – Dambulla

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
The Sigiriya Rock Fortress built back in 5th Century by King Kasyapa is indeed an incomparable spectacle. It has also been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Apart from its gigantic size, Sigiriya’s wonder is in its advanced irrigation systems said to be well ahead of its time. Engineers from around the globe are still bewildered by the existence of such advanced technology in such ancient times. The fortress is further enhanced by its beautiful water gardens, frescos of Sigiriya Damsels, the graffiti Mirror Wall and the giant paws of a lion carved into the rock at the entrance to the final ascent to the top.

Stop At: Golden Temple of Dambulla, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka
The beautiful Royal Rock Temple complex sits about 160m above the road in the southern part of Dambulla. Five separate caves contain about 150 absolutely stunning Buddha statues and paintings, some of Sri Lanka’s most important and evocative religious art. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago, and over the centuries subsequent kings added to and embellished the cave art.From the caves there are superb views over the surrounding countryside; Sigiriya is clearly visible some 20km distant.

Day 2: Dambulla – Minneriya – Negombo/Colombo

Famed as the largest ironwood forest in Asia, the Jaathika Namal Uyana, an ancient forest sanctuary close to Dambulla, leads to the rose quartz mountain range. The latter also claims to be the largest in Asia, a claim which is neither substantiated nor disputed. The tiles of Taj Mahal were made using materials pink quartz of Namal Uyana. According to the historical notes, the Emperor himself visited the animal Uyana pink quartz mountain before using it to make marbles.Namal Uyana is said to have been used as a monastery during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa 3rd century B.C. During the reign of King Dapulu IV, in the 8th century AD, pink quartz mountain was declared as a sanctuary, where people could flee from percussion and stay without any harm.

Minneriya national park is located 182 kms away from Colombo, in the North Central Plains of Sri Lanka. The major city closest to Minneriya National Park is Polonnaruwa. The Minneriya National Park in view of the famous Gathering of the wild elephant herds. The gathering is documented as the largest known meeting place of Asian Elephants in the world. This Elephant Gathering is a thrilling spectacle that would be remembered for rest of the life of all those who were fortunate enough to witness it. 24 species of mammals and over 170 species of birds. Although elephants are its main attraction, Minneriya hosts more than 160 species of birds, Large mammals, including, sloth bears, Sambar deer, and axis deer, as well as smaller mammals such as the Purple-Faced Langur, Toque Macaque, and the Grey Slender Loris make the Minneriya National Park their home.
