Day 1: Pidurangala , Sigiriya ,Village safari

The Pidurangala Rock is a few kilometres away from the famous UNESCO site, the Sigiriya Rock. It is known for the view of Sigiriya Rock from the top of the rock, the white temple situated at the base of the cliff, and the enormous reclining Buddha statue located under an ancient boulder.

Sigiriya Rock or the Lion Rock is an ancient fort located in the Matale District in central Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is in the Matale District of Central Sri Lanka and lies between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane at the height of 370 metres. It consists of a citadel and has ruins of palaces, the Lion Gate, gardens, moats, the Mirror Wall, and many beautiful frescoes (paintings made in wet plaster on walls). The place got its name from the Lion claws, carved at the entrance of the Lion Gate. You can reach the Sigiriya Fortress either by bus or by train, from the main towns of Dambulla or Habarane.

Day 2: Polonnaruwa , Wild life safari

Polonnaruwa, a marvel of a place, is in Northern Sri Lanka. The city once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa under the Chola Empire in the 10th century. This makes it the second most historic kingdom in Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura.
The entire town has two sections – the development and infrastructure part called the Polonnaruwa new town and the Old Site with ancient remains and monarchical structures.
The old part of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has numerous ruins dating back to 800 years comprising of tombs, temples, statues and stupas. Within the town, is the celebrated quadrangle, Gal Vihara – Buddhist 12th century rock temple, Archaeological museum, Polonnaruwa Vatadage – holds the relic of the tooth of Buddha, Rankot Vihara – a 12th century stupa, Hatadage – an ancient relic shrine and the Lankathilaka – a cathedral type Buddhist temple and many other statuettes dedicated to Lord Buddha.
Another beauty is the wildlife in the Minneriya National Park dedicated to elephants. It has the most significant elephant gathering in the whole of Asia. A jeep safari there will show you around monkeys, iguana, crocodiles pelicans and various animals and birds in their natural habitat. The eerie ruins of Polonnaruwa are home to the Potgul vihara – an age-old library with domes for roofs that hold sacred books and a lecture theatre. The eternal city has beautiful landscapes for pictures. For instance, the Parakrama Samudra is one of the five reservoirs in Sri Lanka that has provided water to the people since the days of yore

Day 3: Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is a historical paradise as it houses several heritage monasteries, palaces and monuments. It is known for its vast dagobas or brick stupas, ancient ponds and pools and magnificent temples. The city was established as the first capital of Sri Lanka in 377 BC. It was also at this time that Anuradhapura rose to prominence as a seat of political and economic importance.
Anuradhapura was built around a cut piece from the Bodhi Tree, or the ‘tree of enlightenment’, which is considered sacred by Buddhists. This city was on the peak of political and religious activities for around 900 years. It was invaded in 998 AD, after which it lost its importance. After being overlooked for several years, this World Heritage Site is now accessible again. Currently, Anuradhapura is an important religious site and a popular tourist attraction.
Apart from the Dagobas, the most popular tourist attractions in Anuradhapura are its ruins, or Anuradhapura World Heritage Site, the scared Maha Bodhi tree, Lovamahapaya or Brazen Palace, Archeological museum, Isurumuniya Vihara or rock temple, Ratna Prasada or jewel palace, Royal Pleasure Gardens, Kuttam Pokuna or ponds, Buddha’s samadhi, Royal Palace and many more. Amongst the well-known dagobas are Mirisaveti, Ruwanveli, Abhayagiri, Jetavanarama, Thuparama, Lankarama, and many more. Interestingly, the monasteries in Anuradhapura occupy a whopping 16 square miles by area. With this, it is evident that Anuradhapura is culturally and religiously significant to an unimaginable extent.
Authentic Buddhist traditions, archaeological ruins, lavish palaces, traditional monasteries and informative museums define the grandeur of Anuradhapura. Even though it is a large town, Anuradhapura gives the feel of being in a village. With its well preserved cultural sites, ponds and monuments, Anuradhapura is a well-established tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Tourists visit this town for a rejuvenating getaway, to seek peace and to satiate their inquisitiveness.

Day 4: Pinnawala, kandy
Pass By: Pinnawala, Pinnawala, Sabaragamuwa Province
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was launched to provide shelter and nourishment to abandoned, injured and maimed elephants. The ideology behind this project revolves around the care of abandoned baby elephants, who cannot survive without their mothers.
The local park allows tourists to ride on, pet and play with elephants. The animals are really friendly and if tourists jump into the water with them they spray them with water from the trunk. This also recycle elephant excreta to make paper and happens to be the only factory in the world that does this.
Pass By: Kandy, Kandy, Kandy District, Central Province
Kandy is a prominent Sri Lankan city found precisely in the middle of the country. A city of both historical as well as religious importance, Kandy is renowned for being the site of the Temple Of The Sacred Tooth Relic, unarguably the most famous among all the temples of Sri Lanka. Kandy is also home to numerous remarkable museums and scenic attractions. Kandy is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site declared in 1988.
The Temple Of The Sacred Tooth Relic is the site of preservation of Lord Buddha’s tooth, a Buddhist relic venerated around the world. Adjacent to the temple is the remnants of the Royal Palace of Kandy; the most notable features here are the Audience Hall with its exquisitely carved pillars, and the Rajah Tusker Hall, dedicated to Rajah, who participated in the Kandy Esala Perahera (procession) for fifty years. The World Buddhist Museum, National Museum of Kandy and Sri Dalada Museum, located in the temple complex, have artefacts related to the history of Buddhism, Kandy and the colonial rule.
Apart from the temple complex, one can pay a visit to the stunning and tranquil 19th-century Kandy Lake and the Udawattekele Sanctuary. The informative Ceylon Tea Museum and the gorgeous Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens with almost 4000 floral species are also close to the city.

Day 5: Trincomalee

The quaint city of Trincomalee also famously known as ‘Gokarna’ is an essential fragment of the country, contributing towards the betterment and development of the district and in a nutshell, Sri Lanka. Trincomalee is a port city famous for its white sand beaches and most beautiful harbours. The locals here predominantly speak Tamil.
Owing to its long history of civilian settlements, the town is quite prominent for its culture, tradition, and its well known historical sites. The city is situated on the east coast of the island and is almost 237 kms north-east of Colombo, the capital of the country. The Trincomalee or Gokarna Bay and the ‘Then Kailayam’ (also known as Kailash of the South/Koneswaram) temple are some of the most famous spots in the city.
These attractions bind the history, ancient traditions, and the faith of Shiva to form the ‘Pancha Ishwaram’, meaning five coastal temples or ‘kovils’ in Tamil language. A population of around 99135, the city is based on a peninsula and supposedly was an important seaport in the international trading history. Trincomalee is also the administrative headquarters of the district. Besides these factual points, Trincomalee is well known for its beautiful beaches such as Nilaveli, Uppuveli and the off-shore Pigeon Island. The city is developing as an upcoming tourist destination due to the exciting whale watching point and because of its historical relevance.

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s prime city. The official capital, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, is also within the urban area of Colombo, so Colombo is often called the capital of Sri Lanka as well. The city has a rich colonial heritage, and also some very scenic and popular attractions.
Colombo is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destination. The coastal city is a beautiful place to spend a couple of days just relaxing, indulging in the local food, and leisure activities. It has a good collection of attractions to serve just this purpose, like the Galle Face Green, the Beira lake, and the Viharamahadevi Park, which are popular places for picnics and also for you to spend some quality time with your loved one. The city still has many structures from the colonial period and early history. Most of the museums you see today were once used by the colonial masters. Take for example the Dutch Museum, which was actually the residence of the Dutch Governor of Ceylon when it was first built. Even the Maritime Museum was once a Dutch prison. In Colombo you’ll also find plenty of Buddhist temples, the most famous of these being the Gangaramaya, and the Kelaniya Raj Maha Vihara. Not just that, Colombo is a great place for you to shop for local handlooms, and when you’re done with that, indulge in a variety of sea foods and local cuisine. Colombo makes for a beautiful escape to a picturesque coastal city.
