Stop At: Elephant Transit Home (ETH), 5km west of the Uda Walawe National Park entrance, Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka

ELEPHANT TRANSIT HOME – The primary objective of the Elephant Transit Home is the rehabilitation of orphaned baby elephants and their release back to the wild. The orphanage was established in 1995 and is part of the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation. They take orphaned baby elephants from all over the country. There are no boundaries in the transit home other than those between the wild elephants and the public. Wild elephants are also able to come and go as they please within the 33,000 hectares of the park. On average they feed around 40 orphaned elephants five times a day here and they do this as long as required before the elephants are released into the park itself as young adults. The 55 or so workers of the ETH do a fantastic job! . You can watch the baby elephants being fed and see their antics after feeding once they are out in their enclosure.
