Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Aluthgama

Stop At: Kande Viharaya Temple, 22 Marikkar St, Dharga Town 12080 Sri Lanka
Kande Viharaya Temple is a Buddhist temple which is situated in Beruwala town of the Kalutara district. It is a very popular Buddhist temple and gets its name “Kande Viharaya” due to it being located on top of a hill. It is an archaeologically protected site and was founded by Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero in 1734. Kande Viharaya Temple comprises of a Stupa, Image House, Relic Chamber, Bodhi Tree, Upulvan Devalaya and a couple other main Devalas including Pattini and Kataragama Devalaya.

Stop At: Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, Dedduwa,, Bentota 32350, Sri Lanka
Geoffrey Bawa is Sri Lanka’s most prolific and influential architect. His work has had a tremendous impact upon architecture throughout Asia and is unanimously acclaimed by connoisseurs of architecture worldwide. Every turn and every bend in Bawa’s country home is an interesting experience – with so many exotic plants and trees and views to take in throughout the distinct homes and garden. The house itself is sparse but beautiful, full of impressive paintings and photographs of a bygone age. You have the option of sitting down to have some tea and biscuits.

Stop At: Victor Hasselblad Sea Turtle Research & Conservation Center, School Lane, Kosgoda 80570 Sri Lanka
Turtle hatcheries are good for the environment, save lives, and incredibly fun. There are a few lovely ones down the coast, especially in and around the Kosgoda area. If you swing by during the day you’ll get to see all the adorable little hatchlings or the older and wiser turtles doing their thing in the tanks. But the real fun is being part of the release! It goes down almost everyday around sunset. The staff will pick out the ones fit for release, put them in little buckets and hand them to you.

The estuary of the Madu Ganga river is a complex coastal ecosystem of mangroves and islands. It may be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. A boat trip is a wonderful way of seeing some of the hundreds of species of plants and animals – monkeys eat fruit in the trees, a water monitor lizard glides slowly through the water, and cormorants, egrets and kingfishers wait patiently on the banks, eyeing the water for prey. There are around 64 islands in the river and lagoon, from a tiny speck housing a deserted shrine to one housing 250 families connected to the mainland with a very long footbridge world.

Stop At: Ahungalla Beach, Sri Lanka
Picture yourself slipping into a hammock with a coconut in your hand, gently rocking in the breeze, just lying there watching the days and weeks go peacefully by. Yep, that`s Ahugalla beach in a nutshell.It is a beautiful beach, with a relaxed and laidback atmosphere. Along the beach are plenty of small restaurants and cafes, serving delicious and fresh seafood. After dark, the restaurants put out tables on the beach, light lanterns, and candles, and serve seafood barbecues. Super nice!

Day 2: Ahungalla – Galle – Negombo/Colombo

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The Galle Dutch Fort is situated in the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka and was built first by the Portuguese in 1588. It was later extensively secure by the Dutch during the 17th century when they invaded the country. The specialty of the Galle Fort lies in that it maintains a polished look even after more than 400 years in existence. This is due to the reconstruction work done by the Archeological Department of Sri Lanka. It is named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also known as “Ramparts of Galle”. The Galle Fort withstood the Tsunami which struck the country in Boxing Day, 2004 and has since been restored.

Stop At: Lighthouse Street, Lighthouse St, Galle 80000, Sri Lanka
Galle Fort Lighthouse, one of Sri Lanka ‘s oldest, coastal lighthouse inside Galle Fort. It was originally built in 1848 and due to its picturesque surroundings, it is one of the fort’s most visited attractions, ideal for a serene stroll or an Instagram-worthy snap. Apart from relaxing or taking stunning images of the scenery, one can also take part in activities such as swimming.However it is important to note that visitors are not allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse.

Standing at 26.5 meters tall, the first lighthouse was furnished with a glass prism lens supported by friction reducing Mercury bath. The mercury bath had two purposes: one was to keep the lamp at a perfect level, and the other was to make it smooth and frictionless to rotate.

Stop At: Jungle Beach, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
A few kilometres South of Galle lies a pristine strip of sand widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka, relatively undisturbed by civilization that is accessible only by going through a protected wildlife sanctuary, hence the name, ‘Jungle Beach’. Visiting the beach is just one of many things to do when travelling down the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

Stop At: Japanese Peace Pagoda, Rumassala, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
Japanese Peace Pagoda is one of 80 pagodas worldwide, built by the Japanese to different countries and cities. Only in Sri Lanka, four of these pagodas.The pagoda is on a hill and is visible from afar. Looks especially impressive from the side of Unawatuna, like it grew out of the jungle. At the pagoda you can climb and walk around. From the top, by the way, offers good views of the surrounding area, and even perfectly clear Galle and its Fort. Near the pagoda is a small temple, where access is open to everyone.

Stop At: Stilt Fisherman, X8PH+3M9, Koggala, Sri Lanka
Fishermen on stilts patiently waiting for fish to gobble up the bait dangling from thangus thread attached to long thin poles made out of kithul stems are an iconic sight in Koggala. One of the most attractive and longest beaches of Sri Lanka, Koggala is favoured by fish such as koraburuwo and bollan. Visitors to the Koggala beach can still see fishermen practising this slowly dying but nevertheless charming fishing technique. In the afternoon, beachgoers can stay to watch as these fishermen walk chest deep into the waves to perch on their stilts and cast their fishing rods into the water. Lingering on as the evening gives way to night, visitors can enjoy stunning sunsets, where the entire sky appears to be set ablaze by the fiery sun sinking beneath the waves.
