Itinerary
Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Galle
Stop At: Sea Turtle Farm Galle Mahamodara, 417 D/1, Colombo Road, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Mahamodara Sea Turtle Hatchery is a conservation centre and it is located just a few minutes drive away from Galle, the Hatchery is one of the many conservation centres that are designated to breed and conserve turtles on the island and this is too is being run by volunteers. They are certainly doing a good job in the conservation efforts and visitors could see it themselves. As you enter the centre visitors will be provided with a brief on how their system and conservation efforts work and they will show you around the centre. Most of the volunteers and workers here can communicate in English and you could ask them questions as well.

Stop At: Galle Fort Clock Tower, Rampart Street Galle Fort, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The Galle Clock Tower stands over 25 metres tall on the site of what was once the guardroom, and overlooks the central Moon Bastion and Galle Cricket Stadium. The design of the clock tower was based on the work of John Henry Guess Landon, while the clock itself was donated as a gift by Mudaliyar Samson de Abrew Rajapakse, a patient of Dr Anthonisz who wanted to show his gratitude for the care that he received. The clock no longer tells the time, but the monument to the doctor still stands and is today a major landmark for visitors to the historic Galle Fort. Although the clock tower was built during the time when Sri Lanka was under British rule, the statues dotted around the structure were erected after Sri Lanka achieved its independence.

The National Museum of Galle is situated in Church Street in Galle Fort. It is located in the oldest remaining Dutch building in Galle Fort. The building dates back to 1656 but the museum opened in 1986 by the Department of National Museums. The museum exhibits various collections from the Portuguese, Dutch and British eras. It consists of three sections. The first gallery has exhibits related to turtle shell jewelry manufacturing, Beeralu lace weaving, cottage industry and traditional wooden mask carving. The second gallery has exhibits related to the Dutch period such as furniture and weaponry. The third gallery is known as the “Sri Lanka China Friendship Gallery” and is dedicated to the archeologically and historically important relations between Sri Lanka and China.

The story of the Galle Dutch Fort; a UNESCO World Heritage Site reverberates through every traveller’s photos and captions. Initially built by the Portuguese in the 16th century during their conquests, the fort was later fortified and conquered by the Dutch in the 17th century, until it later fell to the might of the British. The old town of Galle was once used as a trading port for spices and other goods for over 200 years. However, today, the fort has been transformed into a place of history, romance and beauty where travellers are warmly welcomed to dive head first into the exotic stories and be a part of this heritage site.

Also known as the Pointe de Galle, the original Galle Fort Lighthouse happened to be the very first light station to be built on the island. It was constructed in the year 1848 by the British to guide their ships into the harbour. The original structure which stood at 80 feet was located at a site approximately 100 feet from the existing lighthouse.The current lighthouse designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa was constructed in 1939. Towering to a height of 87 feet on a strategic location at the southern end of the promontory, it can be found at the Point Utrecht Bastion on the ramparts of the Galle Fort. From this position, it affords undisturbed views of the sweeping seascape allowing any ships coming in to see its light

Day 2: Galle – Unawatuna – Mirissa
Stop At: Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya, Galle Sri Lanka
A sacred site wrapped in serenity, the Yatagala Temple (or Yatagala Rock Cave Temple) offers a rewarding insight into the island’s Buddhist heritage. Locally referred to as the ‘Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya’, this ancient rock temple dates back more than 2,000 years and was built during the time King Devanampiya Tissa ruled the Kingdom of Anuradhapura. Only around four kilometres from Unawatuna, which is within easy reach of The Fortress Resort & Spa, the Yatagala Temple is one of the most beautiful places in Galle and is well worth exploring

Stop At: Jungle Beach, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
You need to do a hike through Rumassala jungle to reach this beautiful beach but you will feel it’s worth it. The beach is very beautiful, untouched and serene and an ideal place to swim in calm water.You might see a few nice fish and sea creatures there. Although there are showers, a small restaurant as well as toilets at the beach, there are no changing rooms. You will really enjoy a day out at Jungle Beach. Such a peaceful and quiet little beach, which offers not only great swimming, is a nice break from the crowded and merry Unawatuna Beach.

Stop At: Japanese Peace Pagoda, Rumassala, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
First on the list is Rumassala and the Japanese Peace Pagoda, which overlooks the city of Galle from its jungle-fringed cliff-top. This temple is famous for its large statue of Hanuman (definitely worth a Google search as the folklore of Hanuman is fascinating). If the walk through a steep trail and a patch of dense tropical forest isn’t pretty enough, the views from the top which span across the bay of Galle and over to the Fort will definitely call for a few “selfies”. Once you have ‘instagrammed’ a few portraits, a short walk will lead to you to another little temple, which houses a collection of statues of Lord Buddha depicting different stages of his life, along with many other statues of Kings, Queens and Hindu gods.

Stop At: Rumassala, Unawatuna, Sri Lanka
Nestled along Sri Lanka’s south coast, lies an ancient hill that is a rich storehouse of plant life and offers some truly stunning views. Rumassala Hill is one of the most popular Galle attractions and is also linked with ancient folklore; according to a tale in the Ramayana epic, Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God was returning to the island with a chunk of the Himalayas that contained special medicinal herbs. On his journey back a piece of it fell on the area now known as Rumassala. Some claim this to be the reason why one can find medicinal plants in the locale that are quite rare.

The Instafamous Palm Tree Rope Swing on Dalawella Beach, Sri Lanka has been on my bucket list for a while now and you can probably see why! You couldn’t think of a better way to end the day than by swinging out into the sunset over the Indian Ocean on Dalawella Beach. This palm tree rope swing on Dalawella Beach went viral very quickly on Instagram and it now attracts travelers from all over the world to get that classic sunset shot on the palm tree swing!

Day 3: Mirissa – Thissamaharama
Stop At: Mirissa, Mirissa, Southern Province
Come watch, study and photograph the largest creatures on earth, the Whales at Dondra Point in Mirissa, a destination famed for some of the finest Whale and Dolphin sightings in the world. Take an exciting yet comfortable boat trip out to sea and be fortunate to see Blue Whales; the largest creatures on earth, Bryde’s Whales, Sperm Whales, Killer Whales and Fin Whales. You can also meet pods of friendly Dolphins such as the Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins as they playfully somersault and dance on the ocean waves. There’s also a good chance of seeing flying fish, turtle, manta rays and even sharks

Right now you are probably thinking, ‘If it’s a secret beach, why is it on the map?’ Well, my only answer to that is, I believe that at some point Secret Beach Mirissa was a spot that only the locals knew about, though they could only keep it a secret for so long.This beautiful beach is only a short distance from the main beach in town, Mirissa Beach, but this filters out the crowds, as many just opt for the convenient beach at their doorstep

Another one of the amazing places to visit in Mirissa is to climb up the Parrot Rock. This small and easily accessible rock will give you a stunning view of the Mirissa area. This is a place which will take your mind away from work and stress.It is a very quiet place where you can relax watching surfers in the high tides of water. You can also chill out in the nearby restaurants of this place.Visiting it in the evening is also a great idea if you want to enjoy wrapping up activities looking at the breathtaking sunset.The parrot rock is located to the left side of Mirissa beach. So once you reach Mirissa beach you can easily get on this rock to have an excellent sea view.

Coconut Tree Hill Mirissa is a unique cliff located at the end of a beach which is covered in palm trees. Tourists flock to this spot to take photos with all the beautiful tall palms that overlook the ocean. If you’re staying in Mirissa, be sure not to miss this beautiful spot. Coconut Tree Hill Mirissa has become a popular photo spot due to Instagram. The insane amount of palm trees that appear on the edge of this cliff are amazing to admire. The cliff also overlooks the ocean so you have the perfect backdrop.

Day 4: Thissamaharama – Yala
Stop At: Tissa Wewa, Tissamaharama Sri Lanka
Tissa wewa is a historic tank/reservoir built by the old kings of Sri Lanka. The beauty of the manmade lake surrounded by the lushing Hotels is a mesmerizing sight to watch from the middle of the lake.The lake has an island that is captured by beautiful birds. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake, while walking. There are small street vendors who sell fried fresh water fish and prawns. It’s a gorgeous lake, so calm and serene dotted with huge trees and greenery all around. It has a lovely promenade to walk, broad and clean.

The Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple in Tissamaharama, Sri Lanka. It was built in the 2nd century BC by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna (Southern Sri Lanka). The site was consecrated by Lord Buddha himself, who spent some time in meditation there with 500 arhats (individuals who have reached enlightenment). The Tissamaharama Dagoba which is situated in the premises of Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka. A stupa is a Buddhist dome-shaped religious monument found largely on the Indian subcontinent and also called a dagoba in Sri Lanka

Yala is Sri Lanka’s most famous national park. Forming a total area of 1268 sq km of scrub, light forest, grassy plains and brackish lagoons, it’s very rich in wildlife and you’re virtually certain to encounter elephants, crocodiles, buffaloes and monkeys. The Yala National Park is divided into five Blocks, with Block I having an average of 1 leopard per square kilometre, thereby making it the most visited Block in the Park. With areas of thorny scrub land, brackish lagoons and scattered rock monoliths, Yala West provides the perfect environment for the wealth of diverse wildlife found here.

Walk along rustic footpaths sandwiched between tall grass and thorny bushes as the wind blow cold gusts in your faces every now and then. Covered in deep green vegetation that surroundings would stun you with the enormity of nature. This is approximately a 2km hike and is not as demanding as conquering Ella Rock. However, the views from the top of Little Adam’s Peak are bound to leave you awestruck. It is also believed to be the place where King Ravana engaged in his daily ritual of Worshipping the Sun God.

Ravana’s Cave is a popular tourist attraction situated on the Wellawaya Road in Ella. Ravana’s cave is known to be the place where King Ravana hid his wife based on the story in the Ramayana. According to the legend, it is said that Ravana, who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time had kidnapped Queen Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind the Ravana Falls, known as Ravana’s Cave. The cave is a very cool place and the views are mesmerizing and there is a small tea spot when climbing up to it. The tea spot is a good place to sip a cup specialty Sri Lankan tea especially ginger tea while enjoying the amazing view of the place. There is also a nearby mountain which is believed to be King Ravana’s Surya Namaskar Ritual point.

The Ravana falls (Ravana Fall) with a height of 19 metres is one of the most popular activities in Ella, it is visited by almost all tourists. Although he isn’t very tall, but consists of several levels and pools where you can swim. Very popular as it is one of the few places near Ella, where you can swim. Indeed, to the extent of cool water in the pools is very refreshing, so on weekends and during the holidays there are so many locals and tourists that just is not overcrowded.

Stop At: Lipton’s Seat, Haputale 90160 Sri Lanka
The name Lipton’s Seat says it all. It is a famous viewpoint 1970m above sea level. This precise spot in the Haputale Mountains overlooking the Dambetenna Tea Estate is where Sir Thomas Lipton used to sit and contemplate his plantation with its stony landscape and green tea bushes. Look forward to the company of Tamil tea pickers going off to work as you walk uphill. All along you get an increasingly beautiful view of the plantations and the Blue Mountains in the distance. At the top of Lipton’s Seat is now literally an actual seat with a statue of Thomas Lipton on it, with a cup in his hand.
