Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka

Built at the base of a 150m-high (490ft) rock, the golden temple of Dambulla is spread over five caves filled with stunning Buddhist statues and paintings. One of Sri Lanka’s greatest hidden wonders, the cave temple has stood since the 1st century BC. Inhabited by Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BC, it still operates as a practicing place of worship for thousands, making it a must-see pilgrimage on your journey. The colors of the statues in the temple have been preserved by being in the dark interiors of the cave and away from the harsh effects of natural light. As a result, they haven’t aged in the same way as other monuments from the same era, which is remarkable to see up close and first-hand.

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Situated in Matale district, in the middle of Sri Lanka’s famous cultural Triangle, Sigiriya (Lion’s rock, in Sinhalese සීගිරිය) is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens and reservoirs. The fortress’ name is echoed in the staircases that emerge from a lion’s mouth constructed in brick and plaster which offer access to the site. Sigiriya is also renowned for its 5th century pre-christian frescoes, which are reminiscent of the paintings of the Ajanta Caves in India. One of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka, it has also been declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World. The site’s majestic frescoes inspired an aesthetic language that would continue to be practiced for hundreds of years. Poems inscribed on the side of the rock by 6th century admirers visiting Sigiriya are some of the oldest examples of the written Sinhalese language.
