In the 17th Century the Portuguese built a small fort at the mouth of the Bentota River which in Sinhala was called Parangi Kotuwa, meaning the fort of the Portuguese. The river marked the southern extremity of Portuguese held territory in Sri Lanka. The Dutch subsequently allowed the fort to fall into disrepair, converting one of the large buildings within the fort into a colonial rest house for Dutch Officers travelling between Colombo and Galle. Kande Vihara is one of the biggest Buddhist temples in the Kalutara district. The temple is a formally recognized Archaeological Site of Sri Lanka. The name of this sacred place means ‘Mountain Temple’ and was derived because it was built on the crest of a hill near to Aluthgama town. However, the temple gains most of its current fame, not from its historical elements; but from the gigantic Samdhi Buddha statue unveiled in 2006. This 48 m statue is the tallest Seated Buddha statue in the world.While the temple was founded by Venerable Mong Karapagala Dewamitta in 1734. This historical Khettarama Kande Vihare has enriched its importance with the presence of the Stupa, Bo Tree, Relic Chamber, Image House, Sri Vishnu Maha Devala and the four Maha Devalas including Kataragama Devale. Outside the vihara premises, the ancient Bo Tree, Sri Saranatissa Memorial Dhamma Hall and the Poya See-ma meant for Vinaya Kamma are situated.

One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka in terms of construction and atmosphere, Brief Garden in the Bentota area is the brainchild of the famed Bevis Bawa. Bevis was the brother of architect Geoffrey Bawa, and as an artist in his own right, he created his own little world here. Bevis acquired it from his mother in 1929 and set about turning it into an artistic paradise. Bawa had fifteen gardeners to maintain his creation. The Brief Garden includes vegetation-covered ‘house’-like constructs with a door that wouldn’t look out of place in a fantasy film as well as the more normal ponds, flower beds and fern beds. Many of the sculptures are covered with moss and low-growing plants like ferns and vines of various species. Currently, Brief Garden is a 4.9-acre property that was once a rubber plantation.

The Madu River is very rich in biodiversity.The Madu River area surrounding the river are all swampy marshlands covered in mangrove forests and those forests covers over 61 hectares, that is over 150 acres,14 of the 24 species of mangroves are found in this area.The largest animal in the region is the wild boar. There are other smaller animals such as monkeys, a variety of squirrels and etc. When it comes to birds, cormorants and kingfishers are a common sight.

Bentota is one of the finest beaches on the West Coast of Sri Lanka. It has a long broad sandy beach. The beach is ideal for a short stay for business travellers or for holiday makers.
