Stop At: Pidurangala Rock, Pidurangala,Sigiriya, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Pidurangala Rock was a Buddhist monastery at first and it is believed to date back to the reign of King Kasyapa before the first and second centuries .its name translates to ‘offered piles of Gold’. It is a great ‘off the beaten path’ place to visit. At the base of Pidurangala Rock, you will find Pidurangala Rajamaha Viharaya, which is a white temple. The Royal Cave Temple is survived only by a few remains and a huge reclining Buddha, lays inside the temple. The climb to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. While at Sigiriya they are steps, there is no clear path to the top: steep, uneven steps give way to an expanse of boulders and crevices that climbers must navigate in order to reach the summit.

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Also known as the Eighth Wonder of the World this ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance and it is probably the most visited tourist destination of Sri Lanka. . The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains. What remains today are extraordinary ruins. Visitors walk through the remnants of the moat and the water gardens to the foot of the rock. A huge, weather-beaten pair of paws remains of what was once the head and paws of a lion, whose open mouth served as the main entrance to the royal palace. The route to the summit continues along stairs carved from the rock and then via a narrow iron staircase driven into the rock, which has replaced the original brick staircase, now long lost.Roughly than halfway to the summit you will find the Sigiriya frescoes.
