Stop At: Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya Road, Peradeniya 20400 Sri Lanka

Peradeniya botanical garden is picturesquely located adjoining the Mahaweli river, which is the longest river of Sri Lanka. The River flows along with the hugging the western border of the beautiful garden. The gardens has become the most popular resting place or picnic park in the area mostly for local travellers. For many tourists, especially for the local tourists, Peradeniya botanical garden is one of the most loved outdoor gathering spots. It gives them the opportunity to learn trees and plants while enjoying the peaceful gathering. There are more than 4000 species of trees and plants including herbal plants, orchids, palm trees in the garden. Today Peradeniya botanical garden is well known around the world for its large collection of orchid species.

Sri Dalada Maligawa is in the centre of the city, the highest venerated religious place with steeped in cultural heritage attracting the highest respect of the Buddhists as well as the other religions all over the world. The beautiful magnificent temple was built by late king Vimaladharmasooriya 1st in 1592 AD. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. Monks of the two chapters of Malwatte and Asgiriya conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple. Rituals are performed three times daily: at dawn, at noon and in the evenings.

The beautiful lake in front of the Temple of the Tooth was formerly a stretch of paddy fields known as Tigolwela. It was converted to a lake by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinha in 1807. As there had been a beautiful pond named ‘Kiri-muhuda’ (a ‘sea of milk’) in the middle of the Tigolwela, the lake constructed subsequently too was named, ‘Kiri-muhuda’. Deveda Moolacharya is considered the architect of the Kandy Lake. The king first built a dam across the paddy fields, starting from the Pattiruppuwa (Octogen) side, where the steps leading into the lake by the Mahamaluwa (Esplanade) are still visible, stretching across to the Poya-maluwa. The dam, upon which a roadway was constructed, allowed the king to go across to the Malwatte Vihare. According to D’Oyley, the dam was constructed between 1810–1812. The Kandy Lake offers a place for a stroll or a jog. The shady path surrounding the lake provides a view of the hills and the town.

Sitting majestically 88 feet high on top of a hill, crowning Kandy is a white colossal statue of Buddha named as Bahirawakanda Vihara. Climbing the numerous steps to the top gives one a sense of peace, serenity and harmony; and a stunning and gorgeous panoramic view of charming Kandy. Being one of the tallest and most beautiful Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and Kandy’s most revered religious monuments, this Bahirawakanda Vihara has become a popular attraction for tourists.
