What to Expect When Visiting Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka

Itinerary

Day 1: Colombo – Sinharaja forest reserve

Stop At: Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sinharaja Access Road, Mederipitiya, Deniyaya, Galle 81524 Sri Lanka
Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s last viable primary tropical rain-forest with a vast collection of endemic vegetation, wildlife, especially birds and amphibians. Sinharaja is renowned for the Sinharaja bird wave where birds of different species fly in unison.

In case you arrive early, you have the option of visiting Sinharaja for a few hours. As many visitors prefer to simply relax on this first day and enjoy the nature beauty of the surroundings rather than venture into the forest reserve, we have not included the costs associated with this excursion in the overall cost of the tour. If you wish to take this option, we will procure tickets at cost and provide for you.

Day 2: Morning and Evening Bird Watching Sessions at Sinharaja

Stop At: Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sinharaja Access Road, Mederipitiya, Deniyaya, Galle 81524 Sri Lanka
Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s last viable primary tropical rain-forest with a vast collection of endemic vegetation, wildlife, especially birds and amphibians. Sinharaja is renowned for the Sinharaja bird wave where birds of different species fly in unison.

Enjoy both a morning and evening bird watching sessions in the company of the towering trees of Sinharaja.

Day 3: Sinharaja – Galle – Mirissa

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Visit the famed Dutch Galle Fort. Spanning nearly 90 acres, the Fort consists of colonial styled churches, houses and hotels preserved in reminiscence of an era when the country was in the power of the Dutch.

Stop At: Mirissa Beach, Mirissa 81740 Sri Lanka
Free time at the beach. Check out the sunset as you sit at any one of the local restaurants along the beach

Day 4: Dolphin & Whale watching in Mirissa

Stop At: Whale Watching Club, Harbour Road, Mirissa, Sri Lanka
This is an excursion on the sea to the natural whale habitats in a certified, safe and comfortable ocean vessel. This is a guided tour where the marine expert will explain the various sightings and whale behavior. Check-in for the excursion is 6am and generally takes 3-5 hours. In the event that the whales are being elusive, then it can go as long as 6-7 hours.

The species seen often include – Blue whales, Killer whales, Sperm whales, Bride whales, Spinner dolphins, Bottled nosed dolphins. There have also been sightings of Green back turtle, Whale shark, Flying fish and Tuna.

Stop At: Mirissa Beach, Mirissa 81740 Sri Lanka
Free time to relax on the beach. There are restaurants, pubs and lots of activities. You can walk to Coconut Tree hill, go swimming or catch a tan. The day is yours.

Day 5: Mirissa – Bundala Safari – Yala

Stop At: Hummanaya Blow Hole, Kudawella, Tangalle Sri Lanka
‘Hummnaya’ which literally means, ‘blow-hole’ is longest of its kind in Sri Lanka. It is found by walking through a small fishing village. The walk through the village can be an experience in itself. Keep your cameras ready as the sea roars and spurts the water high into the air

Stop At: Bundala National Park, A 2 Road .bundala Junction Hambantota, Weligatta 82000 Sri Lanka
A guided safari. The Bundala National Park is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka. It over 1000 species of birds, the highlight being the greater flamingo, which migrate in large flocks.

Day 6: Yala Jeep Safari – Elephant transit home – Udawalawe

Stop At: Yala National Park Sri Lanka
A 6 hour jeep safari with our local wildlife expert. This excursion commences at 6.30am, with a 6am check-in. Tickets will be purchased in advance so that you don’t have to waste time in line at the ticket counter. See Yala in its full glory basking in the morning sunlight.

Stop At: Elephant Transit Home (ETH), 5km west of the Uda Walawe National Park entrance, Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
The Department of Wildlife Conservation initiated a major step towards the welfare and conservation of orphaned baby elephants in 1995. This resulted in the establishment of “Ath Athuru Sevana” (Elephant Transit Home) at the Udawalawe National Park.

The ETH takes care of orphaned elephant calves – until they are independent and able enough to be released back to the wild. The first orphaned baby elephant taken care of was a one year old female that was found wandering alone in the forest near Meegalawa area in the Anuradhapura District. Since then, more than 250 elephants have been taken care of at the ETH and have been re-introduced back to the wild to their natural habitats at the age of five, when they are able to take care of themselves.

Feeding the calves with milk happens every three hours. Public viewing of the feeding is permitted daily at 9am, 12 noon, 3pm and 6pm.

Day 7: Camping at Udawalawa, Elephant Safari

Stop At: Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
This is a jeep safari excursion with our local safari guide. The park is fairly large with open terrain and small plains. There are large numbers of elephants and birds whilst you are also likely to see crocodiles, land monitors, wild boars and deer.

Day 8: Udawalawe – Colombo

Stop At: Talangama Wetland, Lake Road, Kotte, Colombo Sri Lanka
A green oasis located close to Colombo City, and an ideal place for bird watching.
